What Others Have to Say

“As a member of my Advanced Reader Team, Jean's been a huge asset--she helps to make my books the best they can be. Her attention to detail and professionalism are second to none. She often finds things that other proofreaders miss. Hire this woman, stat!”

DV Berkom, USA Today Bestselling Author

“Jean was a helping hand in my first self-published book. She really took the time to read through it, ask questions, paid close attention to detail and really followed a strict set of guidelines when proofreading and offering suggestions. Her ability to offer creative alternatives for sentences/words helped me a lot. Although there was no deadline for this book, I feel that if I were in need of a proofreader for a specific deadline, Jean would be able to complete her tasks ahead of the deadline. The suggested changes are still under review, but I appreciate the time she took to review the book and offer her feedback. Her feedback on the book itself was honest and thorough. I will definitely be using her services for future books I plan to publish.”

Renai Deragon, Braillist/Writer

“I have had the opportunity to work with Jean Durbin for 4+ years. She has a great work ethic and is a very hardworking person. She knows a lot about technology, is very organized, punctual, and committed to meeting all her goals. Jean Durbin is great with various technology programs and her work is a good reflection of her knowledge.”

Raiza Salas-Soto, teacher

“Jean is very prompt when it comes to deadlines. She is fantastic with a multitude of computer systems, attentive to details, and very organized. She works well with others and is a great team player.”

Human Proofreading vs. AI Proofreading

The choice between human proofreading vs. Artificial Intelligence (AI) proofreading is a common dilemma. Each has unique advantages as well as drawbacks. Deciding which option to use depends on the result desired for each situation. The difference matters, especially when writing quality messages such as business documents, marketing material, correspondence, and books.

Context is one of the most important aspects of writing. Recent research on the subject, such as those done by Scribbr and PaperBlazer, shows that humans will excel in understanding the context and nuances of language, while AI does not. AI applications can also compromise the accuracy of citations and quotes, require frequent prompting, consistently miss some issues, and cannot edit much at one time.

Cultural sensitivity is another area where humans are better equipped to provide advice. A human can adjust their strategies and focus on the specific needs and expectations of the writer. The lack of morality in AI means they cannot adapt their process as needed to fit the situation.

Stylistic inconsistencies should also be evaluated when deciding on a proofreading system. AI can fix some deviations in style, while humans can fix all of them. Since AI is based on prediction only, it cannot provide the same level of customization as a human can. Humans, however, can adjust as needed to maintain the integrity of the style intended.

Turn-around time considerations are also a concern in the decision process. Unlike AI proofreading, human proofreaders can document and explain changes needed so that you don’t waste time determining what changes AI made and why. This AI limitation results in the time-consuming job of reviewing and applying the edits. Human proofreading can be time-consuming due to the need for multiple read-throughs, but it is also time-consuming to copy/paste, review, and apply AI edits.

Although AI proofreaders can provide a certain level of customization, human proofreaders can customize at a much higher level. The accuracy of both human and AI proofreading maintains consistent levels of accuracy, but they can still make errors. To maximize the accuracy of your writing, a combination of human and AI proofreading might be the solution. For the highest quality results, using previously agreed upon AI sources, such as Grammarly or ChatGPT, may be referenced to provide you with the superior results your writing deserves.
